Year One Challenges Week 10
English: We hope you enjoyed the story of the Singing Mermaid last week! This week we would like you to look at the book/listen to the story online again and see if you can notice some rhyming words. When words rhyme they sound the same eg cat and hat, pig and dig. How many pairs of rhyming words can you find in the story? Ask a grown up to help you write some of them down and notice which letters are the same in both of the rhyming words eg cat, hat and pig, dig. Make a list of words that rhyme with these:
ring way fill dog
Now can you use two of your rhyming words to write silly sentences? Eg The cat had a new hat. The pig likes to dig.
Look out for rhyming words when you are reading your own books too!
Maths: This week we are thinking about position, direction and movement. The mermaid was kept inside a tank and she rode on a horse. Can you use one of your toys to show your grown up that you know what all these words mean?
on top of next to underneath near between in front of inside
behind on the left of on the right of outside
Then have a look around your house and garden and see how many things you can find that move in these ways:
forwards and backwards left to right (or right to left)
up and down round and round
Draw pictures to show what you found!
Science: We have been learning about materials and this week we would like you to find out what the word waterproof means. Can you think of anything that needs to be waterproof? Can you find some different materials eg paper, a towel, silver foil, a plastic bag and think of a test you could do to see if they are waterproof. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CSs0ogUUqdM shows a simple test you could do. Now draw pictures of objects that need to be waterproof.
Art: Have a look online at Red Ted Art and try making yourself a paper plate mermaid twirler
https://www.redtedart.com/paper-plate-mermaid-twirler/.

Finally:
Don’t forget to keep reading and practicing your Phonics too!
BBC Bitesize Phonics Phase 3 has lots of short video clips to remind you of the sounds we have learned and games to help you practice them.
Have a lovely week and make sure you stay safe!

Year One Challenges Week 9
English: This week we have a new book to look at. It’s a book by an author we already know…Julia Donaldson and the title is The Singing Mermaid. Read the book, if you have it at home, or find it online.
Make a list of the characters and choose two of them to describe, using lots of adjectives. Then think about the settings and choose one of them to describe too.
Maths: In our story, the circus toured for a whole year. So this week we will be thinking about time. Practice saying the days of the week and the months of the year. If your grown-up says a day or a month can you say what comes next or what comes before it? The year is split into 4 seasons and the names of them are in the book, can you find them? Now divide a piece of paper into 4 sections and label each one with a different season. Find out which months belong in each one and draw some of the things that happen eg leaves change colour, flowers start to grow, Father Christmas visits. Think about what you wear in the different seasons too. See if you can find out how many days are in one week, how many weeks are in one month and how many months are in one year. How many days are there in one year and is that number always the same? If not, then why? Which month sometimes has an extra day? Find out which month your birthday is in and count how many months you have got to wait. Ask the people in your family when their birthdays are and work out the order in the year, starting from January. Whose birthday is first and whose is last?
Geography: In the story the mermaid liked to sit on the beach and sing. Think about going to the seaside eg New Brighton and imagine you are walking along the prom. Find out what the word prom is short for, and what the word means! Draw pictures of some of the things you might see eg café, fun fair, lighthouse and write labels for them. These things are all man-made features. Can you think of some things you might see at the seaside that are natural features? Write a list of both.
P.E. This week we would like you to join in the Cosmic Kids Yoga session about Mimi the Mermaid, which you can find on YouTube.

Year 3 Home Learning tasks week 9, by Mrs McAlynn
Date: 29th May 2020 @ 3:11pm
Hi Year 3!
What a beautiful sunny week we have had! We hope you have been able to enjoy it with your family.
Task 1: English
We hope that you have found lots of time for reading while school has been closed. This week we would like you to write a book review of either your favourite book or a new book that you have read at home over the past few weeks. We want to know about your favourite character, favourite part and why you would recommend the book to a friend.
Task 2: Science
We would like you to complete the following eggsperiment for your science learning this week! You will need an egg, some white vinegar and a glass.
*Place your egg in a glass and cover with white vinegar. Watch as the egg shell starts to bubble and write an observation of what you can see.
*Keep checking your egg for the next 24-48 hours- what changes can you record? What does your egg look like after 48 hours? We would love to see photos and videos!
Task 3: Design and Technology
Last week we asked you to research Parkgate and hopefully you found out that it used to be an important shipping port and then a popular seaside resort. We want you to imagine that the Council are turning Parkgate back in to a seaside resort for family holidays. Can you create a labelled design of your ideal seaside resort, including all the attraction you would like to see, for example, funfair, donkey rides, watersports etc.
Please share your learning with us on our Facebook and Twitter pages: we love seeing all the things that you are getting up to!
Take care, Mrs McAlynn and Mr Woodland

Hi Children,
We hope you have all had a lovely week! Please find the video attached of the story ‘Stickman’ and here are some activities for you to complete based on the story!
1. Think of an alternative ending for the story of Stickman! Does he get home to the family tree? Can you think of another way Stickman could be mistaken for a normal stick (eg. a walking stick, a chopstick)
2. Collect some sticks from outside and compare their length. Which one is the longest? Which one is the shortest? Can you put them in order from the shortest to the longest? Try and use your sticks to make some different 2D shapes and count the number of sides!
3. Use the sticks you collect to make your own Stickman! You could then use your Stickman to act out your story.
4. Find out about your family tree and write it down to share with your family!

Blog Ideas - Pirates
Hi preschool,
We hope you are keeping safe and enjoying the sunshine.
We are continuing with our topic about pirates this week. Have you been having fun with the activities Miss McNamee gave you last week? This week we thought you could:
Task 1 Make your own pirate ship using different containers. Find out if they will float or do they sink? You could even give them a pirate flag.
Task 2 If you haven’t made a treasure chest yet why not make one out of egg cartons. Decorate it and put some coins in and count them. Can you count them out as you share them with your family?
Task 3 Google the pirate song ‘Over the Deep Blue Sea’ and have fun joining in with the words and actions. Colour a piece of paper black and make yourself an eye patch to wear. Use a piece of string to fasten it.
Task 4 Can you think of your own pirate name and write it? Mine is Boots McLaren, Mrs Hayes’s name is Captain Hayes Peg-Leg and Miss McNamee’s name is Matey McNamee
Have fun. See you soon xxx
Year One Weekly Tasks: Week 8, by Mrs Carney
Date: 26th May 2020 @ 7:41pm
Hi Children,
This week we would like you to focus your work around a short animation found on literacyshed.com.
https://www.literacyshed.com/bubbles.html
You will need to watch the short clip in order to complete the different tasks. When it all seems blue, happiness may be close by… if you just look closely at your surroundings perhaps you will find it! Gabby is walking on the beach and finds a bottle of bubbles - when she blows it she gets transported into fantasy. She has fun riding on bubbles and meets people and things on her way.

Writing opportunities: Choose from one or more of the following ideas:
· Write a description of the beach.
· Write the story told in the film.
· Choose a creature that lives in the sea and write a fact file about it.
· Write a poem about Gabby’s adventure in the sea.
Don't forget to use your senses to add detail!
Geography:
In the animation, Gabby is on the beach. Draw a picture of a beach and label all the features e.g. beach, cliff, coast, ocean, port, harbour etc.
https://www.visitbritain.com/gb/en/destinations
Look at aerial photographs of the UK and find some seaside towns. Would you rather live at the coast or in the city? Why?

Art Opportunities:
· Paint an underwater scene.
· Make an underwater world on a paper plate
· Draw the outline of a fish and use something (such as a piece of celery) to print the scales
· Put some water, washing up liquid and paint into a cup. Use a straw to blow bubbles and then put a piece of paper over the top to take a print. Try using different colours and fill the paper.
Science Investigation:
Follow the link below to find out about the Science Museum’s special bubble mixture recipe, make some amazing bubble blowers… and create some really big bubbles!
https://learning.sciencemuseumgroup.org.uk/resources/bubble-fun/
Can you make a really big bubble?
• Can you invent a new type of bubble blower?
• Which bubble blower makes the best bubble? What makes it so good?
Hope you have lots of fun with this week's activities!

Year 3 Home Learning tasks week 7, by Mrs McAlynn
Date: 22nd May 2020 @ 2:24pm
Hello Year 3!
We hope you have had a good week and have been keeping yourselves busy with your families. This week we would like you to have a go at the following activities:
Task 1:
The PE Coach, Joe Wicks, has injured his hand and so he needs your help with his PE lessons! We would like you to create your own keep fit programme for children to join in with. You need to think of a warm up activity to get your body moving and then 10 different exercises to do for 1 minute each, for example, jumping jacks, lunges or bunny hops. Remember to include some stretches at the end to help you cool down!
Task 2:
We would like you to design a healthy menu to share with your family at home, including a starter, main course, dessert and drink. Can you write recipes for each of your dishes with clear instructions to make them? Share them with your families at home to see what they think!
Task 3:
In our History lessons we would have been starting to learn about Parkgate after the half term, and so we would like you to do some research and find out as much as you can about Parkgate. Can you find out what it was originally used for?
Please share your learning with us on our Facebook and Twitter pages: we love seeing all the things that you are getting up to!
Take care, Mrs McAlynn and Mr Woodland

Challenges Week 7, by Mrs Carroll
Date: 18th May 2020 @ 4:41pm
Year One Challenge Tasks Week 7
Hi, Year One! This week we are going to be learning a new word: SIMILIES. You already use similies without even realising it! Have a look at this video which explains what they are:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqjmiIUPQtw
Now you know what a simile is we would like you to think of as many as you can. Lots of similies mention animals: can you use each of these animals in a simile?
mouse lion snail kitten monkey
giraffe elephant fox owl
Remember to use the word like or as in your similes. Can you write some of them down in your neatest handwriting?
Now read the book Quick As A Cricket by Audrey Wood (you can find it online) and see how many similies you can spot….there are LOTS!!
In MATHS this week we are learning about CAPACITY and VOLUME. Begin by reading the story: Mr Archimedes’ Bath (available online) and use the language: empty, nearly empty, half full, nearly full and full to describe how much water is in his bath. Then you can have fun filling containers, using water outside if the weather is nice, or maybe pasta or rice and write labels to say how much is in each container (full, empty, half full etc). Can you put them in order from empty to full? Use an egg cup or an empty yoghurt pot to count how many cups of water or pasta it takes to fill different containers; put them in order too. Compare two containers and explain to a grown up which one holds more/less and tell them how you know. You could also find out the names of the units we use to measure capacity and volume ( Clue:look at the labels on bottles!)
SCIENCE:
In Science we have started to think about Materials. This week we would like you to find lots of different objects and test them to see if they float or sink. You could do this in a paddling pool or maybe in the bath, or just ask for a bowl of water: but make sure there is a grown-up around to keep an eye on you while you do this!
Create a table (see below) to show your results. Draw each object you tested in the correct part of the table and write a label to say what it is. Think about what each object is made from. What have you found out by doing this investigation? Do all wooden objects float? Do all metal objects sink? Do all big objects sink? Do all small objects float?
| Float | Sink |
|
|
Watch CBeebies:Why Do Things Sink And Float? https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/watch/messy-goes-to-okido-why-do-things-sink-and-float
Then have a go at making your own boat and test it to see if it floats!
Have fun and stay safe!
