Welcome to Our Class

Welcome to Year 5! Our classroom is a warm, engaging environment where every child is encouraged to be curious, kind, and resilient. This page contains all the essential details you need for a smooth and successful school year.

Key Staff

Essential Class Routines

• Reading Books: Reading Books will be sent home on Friday. Children should bring their reading folder and library book to swap each week.

• PE Days: Year 5 will have PE on a Tuesday morning. Please ensure your child comes to school wearing their full school PE kit on this day.

• Water & Snacks: Children must bring a named, reusable water bottle daily (water only). A healthy fruit or vegetable snack is provided/allowed for breaktime.

• Equipment: All essential stationary is provided in class. Please do not send children with personal pencil cases or toys unless requested.

Learning Curriculum Topics

Our Curriculum Learning Topics for Autumn Term are:

• English: Children will write a diary entry and an information text (biography) based on the text ‘Ice Trap’. They will focus on varying their sentence types by including relative clauses and examples of parenthesis. 
• Mathematics: Year 5 will develop their understanding of place value, working with increasingly large numbers and using efficient strategies for addition and subtraction. Children will also explore multiples and factors, developing their ability to identify number relationships and apply these skills to solve problems. 
• Science: Forces and how they affect the movement of objects. Children will explore different types of forces, including gravity, friction, air resistance and water resistance, and develop their understanding of how these forces act on objects.
• History: Children will study the Vikings and Anglo-Saxon struggle for England. Children will explore who the Vikings were, where they came from and why they raided, invaded and eventually settled in Britain.
• Geography: Year 5 will be learning about mountains and how they are formed. Children will explore different types of mountains, how tectonic plates and volcanic activity shape the Earth, and the key features of mountain landscapes. They will locate and compare famous mountain ranges around the world, including the Himalayas and the UK’s highest mountains, and investigate how people live and work in mountainous regions. 
• Art: Children will develop their drawing skills through the work of artist Mike Barrett, exploring how observation, proportion, detail, shading and tone can be used to create realistic artwork. Children will experiment with different techniques and materials to develop their own detailed, realistic drawings. 
• DT:  Year 5 will design and make lanterns using a wooden frame. Children will develop their skills in measuring, cutting, joining and assembling materials, while creating a lantern that is both functional and visually appealing.
