Welcome to Year 6! Our classroom is a warm, engaging environment where every child is encouraged to be curious, kind, and resilient. This page contains all the essential details you need for a smooth and successful school year.

Essential Class Routines

• Reading Books: Children should bring their reading folder and library book to swap each week. Books will come home on a Friday and should be brought back into school on a Monday. Please leave a short comment in your child's yellow reading records.

• PE Days: Tuesday. Please ensure your child comes to school wearing their full school PE kit on these days.

• Water & Snacks: Children must bring a named, reusable water bottle daily (water only). A healthy fruit or vegetable snack is allowed for breaktime.

• Equipment: All essential stationary is provided in class. Please do not send children with personal pencil cases or toys unless requested.

Learning Curriculum Topics

Our Curriculum Learning Topics for Autumn Term are:

• English: Our children will be exploring the fascinating rewilding of Yellowstone National Park, using their learning to create an engaging non-fiction piece. They will also draw inspiration from our class text, Wolf Wilder, to write an exciting narrative, developing their descriptive language, characterisation and storytelling skills.

• Mathematics: In Maths, Year 6 will be developing their understanding of place value and applying this knowledge to addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They will also be exploring fractions, building confidence in comparing, simplifying and calculating with fractions. We are encouraging children to explain their mathematical thinking and apply their skills to increasingly challenging problems.

• Science: Year 6 will be focusing on Living Things and their habitats: grouping organisms, classifying animals and plants. 

• Topic History/Geography: In Year 6, pupils will explore the impact of World War II on the lives of people in Britain, including evacuation, rationing, the Blitz and life on the Home Front. In Geography, pupils will develop their understanding of the United Kingdom, exploring its physical and human geography, including landscapes, cities, population and land use.

• Art/DT: We will be focusing on the artist Ed Fairburn and learning about his style of cross-hatching. Producing their own piece based on the famous piece 'Aberdeen Harbour'.
