Year 3 Rocks Workshop – A Fantastic Hands-On Science Experience!

Date: 4th Dec 2025 @ 5:07pm

Year 3 had a brilliant time this week taking part in a fantastic workshop all about rocks. The session was packed with hands-on investigations, scientific discovery and lots of excitement as the children explored the Year 3 Rocks curriculum.

To begin, the children examined a wide range of rocks, comparing their appearance, textures and features. They learnt about the three main categories of rockigneous, sedimentary and metamorphic — and discussed how each type is formed. This links directly to our Year 3 science topic on Rocks, Fossils and Soils.

The workshop then moved into a series of engaging scientific tests:

🔍 Acid Test – The children used a simple acid reaction to identify if certain rocks contained carbonate.
🪨 Scratch Test – They tested rocks for hardness, discovering which ones were soft enough to scratch and which were much tougher.
💧 Absorbency Test – By adding water, they investigated how much liquid different rocks could absorb, helping them classify them even further.
⚖️ Weighing and Comparing – Pupils weighed each rock sample to compare their mass and discuss what this tells us about density.

To finish off the workshop, the children took part in a fun end-of-session quiz, showing off everything they had learnt through the workshop Their enthusiasm and teamwork was wonderful to see and it was clear how much new knowledge they had gained.

Year 3 had an amazing time becoming real geologists for the day — well done everyone!
