World Book Day, by Mrs Schultz

Date: 6th Mar 2025 @ 10:16pm

What a great time Year 1 have had celebrating World Book Day. We have had numerous author workshops this week, some online and one special live one with Stuart Reid! The children have listened to many stories and illustrated with famous illustrators such as Axel Scheffler. Today, they created their own sea monster stick puppets, inspired by our English text 'Lula and the Sea Monster'. They then designed their own book cover. We had a parade of our costumes around the Junior playground with F2 and Y2. We were very impressed with the effort made with costumes as always. A prize was given to the best homemade World Book Day costume. Congratulations Zachary- our very own Mr Bump! We hope you didn't have too much trouble removing the blue paint this evening!

Year 3K Rocks Workshop, by Mrs Harris

Date: 4th Mar 2025 @ 8:52pm

Year 3K had a fantastic time investigating rocks with Mr Ravenscroft from Hi-impact today!

We used our scientific enquiry skills to carry out 5 different investigations.

1. Examining rocks with a magnifying glass and talking about what we could see.

2. A Scratch test: We attempted to scratch the rocks with tools to see how hard/soft they were.

3. Absorbency test: We used a digital scale to weigh the rock before and after dipping in water to measure how much was absorbed.

4. Acid test: We used a pipette to drop hydrochloric acid onto the rock and observe what happened.

5. Fossils hunt! We looked through the fossil boxes to identify fossils and then classified them by type.

A brilliant way to start our new science topic. Fantastic work Year 3!

Y3M Rock Workshop, by Mrs Harris

Date: 4th Mar 2025 @ 8:39pm

Year 3M had a fantastic time at their 'Rocks' workshop with Mr. Ravenscroft. They examined rocks with magnifying glasses, tested their hardness with scratch tests, checked absorbency by weighing them before and after adding water, and experimented with hydrochloric acid. They also went on a fossil hunt to identify different types of fossils. The day even included a pancake break—because even scientists need a treat! A fun and educational day for all.

Hi-Impact Robot and Coding Workshop, by Mrs Schultz

Date: 31st Jan 2025 @ 4:54pm

Year 1 had a robot and coding workshop this week. They used iPads to control a small robot encased in a ball, called Sphero. They could create block codes to program a bear to move around a map and played a coding game called Codeapillar. They spent some time creating a code using different coloured mats, then sat a car on top to see what happened. They had to find out which colour programmed what direction. They quickly realised that green meant 'go' and 'red' was to stop the car. The other colours turned the car left or right. They had so much fun and couldn't wait to have a go of every activity on offer.  Special thanks goes to Hi-Impact who provided all the resources and teaching for this session.

Lunar New Year, by Mrs Schultz

Date: 31st Jan 2025 @ 4:06pm

This week, Year 1 have celebrated the Lunar New Year. We watched a video that explained how and why people celebrate the Lunar New Year and what animal represents the 2025 New Year- this year is the year of the snake! The children could then choose from a selection of activities to help us to celebrate. We made and decorated lanterns, practised writing Mandarin characters for the numbers, made snakes and coloured some posters. The children had a great time and asked for us to do the same next week! Since the Lunar New Year is celebrated over 15 days, they may have their wish granted! One child brought in some rice crackers and Chinese sweets for his class to share too!
